Covellite from the Leonard Mine in Butte, Montana
This gorgeous natural specimen of Covelite with Chalcocite and Pyrite comes from the Leonard Mine in Butte and shows incredible metallic blue flash and iridescence. Note that in the last four photos, I've spritzed the specimen with water to be able to photograph the truly amazing iridescent quality of this specimen highlighted with bright flashes of pink, purple and indigo.
Covellite is rare copper sulfide mineral with the formula CuS. This indigo blue mineral is ubiquitous in copper ores, it is found in very limited abundance. Despite the very rare occurrence as a volcanic sublimate, the initial discovery of this mineral was at Mount Vesuvius by Nicola Covelli (1790–1829), after whom it was named.
