Natural Chalcanthite Thumbnail Specimen from The Planet Mine, La Paz County, Arizona
Natural neon blue specimen of Chalcanthite from The Planet Mine in La Paz County, Arizona.
Natural Chalcanthite crystals are very rare in nature. The Planet Mine is no longer producing so Chalcanthite from this location is becoming increasingly rare! However, it should be noted that Chalcanthite crystals can be grown synthetically from copper sulfate solutions.
Note that Chalcanthite can be toxic if ingested (wash hands after handling as the fibers of the crystals easily shed when handling it) and it should be kept in a dry location away from water, as it is water-soluble.
Chalcanthite is a natural, water-soluble copper sulfate pentahydrate. It is a secondary mineral that is formed in arid climates or in rapidly oxidizing copper deposits. It’s name comes from the Greek words “chalkos” and “anthos”, literally translated as “copper flower”.
