Opalized Rainbow Ammonite Fossil from Mahajanga, Madagascar

This Ammonite fossil from Madagascar has astounding neon rainbow colored striations in the red to green range throughout the naturally polished surface. This specimen is a wonderful example of this opalization.

The formation of Opalized Ammonites dates back over 66 million years to the late Cretaceous period when Ammonites, a diverse group of marine mollusks, thrived in the ancient ocean. These cephalopods, with their spiral shells and tentacle-like appendages, inhabited the oceans and left behind their fossilized remains. As Ammonite shells were buried in sediment layers, mineral rich groundwater with dissolved silica, gradually permeated the surrounding rock. Over time, the silica rich groundwater replaced the organic matter of the Ammonite shell, resulting in the preservation of the original shell’s intricate structure and opalization took place as the silica spheres arranged in a repeating pattern, resulting in the beautiful iridescent play of color that can be seen in these gemmy fossils.
