Brucite is a magnesium hydroxide mineral (Mg(OH)2) that forms soft, waxy to glassy, white or pale-green, gray, or blue crystals, plate aggregates, or fibrous masses. It often forms as an alteration product of other magnesium-rich minerals, especially in ultramafic rocks and marbles.
Formation: Brucite typically forms through alteration or low-grade metamorphism of other magnesium-rich minerals, such as periclase and olivine. It can also be found in ultramafic rocks and marbles.
Appearance: Brucite can appear as flattened tabular crystals, lamellar and fibrous aggregates, or foliated masses. It has a waxy to glassy luster and a pearly luster on its cleavage.
Color: Brucite can be white, light greenish, grayish, bluish, yellow or honey-yellow. Manganoan varieties can also be brownish red or deep brown.
Hardness: Brucite has a hardness of 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale.
Tenacity: Brucite is sectile, meaning it can be easily separated into thin plates.
Cleavage: Brucite exhibits perfect cleavage in one direction.
