Imilac Pallasite Meteorite from Northern Chile Thin Specimen
Like many pallasites, Imilac is a stunner. Its large olivine crystals in a fairly scant nickel-iron matrix are well-suited for slicing and translucent displays, even more so than most pallasites: thus it is one of the world's most coveted pallasites for collections.
Imilac is the name of a PMG pallasite found in the Atacama Desert of Northern Chile in 1822. At 4.5 billion years old, the Imilac meteorite dates back to the beginning of our solar system, containing information about our own planet’s early history. It’s thought to have been part of a much larger meteor that weighed up to 1,000 kilograms and exploded over the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, possibly in the fourteenth century. The arid desert conditions kept the pallasite in quite good condition until its 1822 discovery.
Imilac Pallasite is becoming more difficult to find and prices have been rising. I’ve been holding this extraterrestrial gem in my own collection for over 30 years. I’ve thought of making a piece of jewelry with it, but never got around to it, though it would make a gorgeous piece of jewelry. Both sides are highly polished.
