This Petrified Palm Wood cabochon has great coloring with clouds of red and a strong golden background with fantastic patterning for Petrified Palm Wood with the well-defined dark spots showing the rod-like structure of the wood grain. I believe that this material is from Louisiana (but could possibly be from Texas). Wherever it's from, it's a great example of prime Petrified Palm Wood and will definitely help inspire you for your next project.

Petrified Palm Wood, the State Stone of Texas, is from 20-40 million year old palm trees which has become silicated (basically, the organic materials in the wood are replaced with quartz, which is a "silicate"). Tropical forests were present 100 million years ago in what is now Texas, and the palm trees that fell into the mineral-rich mud became petrified, actually, more specifically fossilized. Petrified wood has been called the most beautiful of fossils and is actually the state gem of Washington.
