Ocean Jasper Designer Cut Cabochon

This Ocean Jasper cabochon has remarkable red, pink and white orbs rimmed in beautifully contrasting green and red. evoking that exciting Christmas morning feeling like a hoard of holly berries on the bush, or maybe a beautiful red rose garden from high above. This cabochon also has small druzy pockets to add a bit of sparkle. This nicely domed cabochon is a prime example of some of the new Ocean Jasper coming out of Madagascar and would make a gorgeous piece of jewelry or a nice addition to any collection.

I cut this cab by hand and it's been polished to a high sheen both front and back with slightly rounded bottom edges for easy setting.

Note that all my photos were taken using full spectrum lighting, which does fairly well in replicating natural sunlight. However, almost all cut stones will look best and brightest in direct sunlight.

A fairly new entry to the market introduced in 2000, Ocean Jasper has quickly become a highly prized material. It is truly a unique stone, with its distinct spherical inclusions, originating as spheres of silica rich magma, in a translucent base. The name of "Ocean Jasper" is truly dually descriptive because it was found along the northwest seacoast of Madagascar (only collected at low tide) and they felt that it was "suggestive of the bubbling surf of the sea." A second find was discovered recently not too far from the first location and has found its way to the market, just as the material from the first location was becoming very scarce. This new location has been producing some wonderful color, and one of the most notable differences is that the spheres/orbs tend to be smaller those appearing in the original location.
