The reddish orange coloring is the rarest of this rare agate and this collector grade Orpheus Agate cabochon has that in abundance along with beautiful green banding and tiny plumes flowering within rivers of translucent agate. There are perhaps many stones that I’ve cut over the years that may be more beautiful from a novice point of view, but it is the insane rarity and unexpectedness of this one is that makes it beyond words. I've cut this one with a medium dome, slightly angled girdled sides and a slightly beveled flat back. This incredible absolute one-of-a-kind stone definitely deserves to be showcased, whether in jewelry, or in a collector’s display!
This is the last of these AAA+ grade Orpheus Agates I will be offering for sale in my shop, as what I have left is going directly to my showcase while one piece of it is destined for my jeweler's bench! (I said that once before, but I found enough rough to make just this one more)
Bulgarian Orpheus Agate Designer Cut Cabochon
39 x 31 x 7.1mm
57.34 cts.
I cut this cab by hand and it's been polished to a high sheen both front and back with slightly rounded bottom edges for easy setting.
This rare agate comes from the Rhodope mountains in the Kardzhali Provence of southern Bulgaria. In 2004 the Agate exhibition in Munich found that Orpheus agate is unique in the world. Named after the ancient legendary Greek musical hero who frolicked in the area where the deposit is located. This unusual and rare stone from Bulgaria can be comprised of many layers of beautiful green Seladonite and golden yellow/brown jasper with some pockets of clear agate, with, on rare occasions, beautiful plumes within the clear agate.
